Toe and Ankle Injuries?

The first metatarsophalangeal joint of my right foot (the joint connecting my big toe to the rest of my foot) has been hurting me for over a year now. It hurts most after running or long periods of walking, but sometimes it will hurt for apparently no reason at all. The pain is generally an ache, ranging from dull and almost negligble to sharp and distracting. I used to play tennis regularly and also tend to walk fast, putting extra pressure on my feet. Does this sound like a sesamoid injury or turf toe (even though I don’t remember a specific hyperextension event)? Regardless, what would be the best way to treat it? I have tried taping the area before, which helps with the pain–is there some kind of toe brace I could buy, or a specific way to tape my toe?

Also, on an unrelated note, I just twisted my ankle on the way to work… it’s mildly painful now, but I have no access to ice or other first aid materials… any suggestions until I can go home?
